Henry Powell-Davies

PhD Student
I gained my Integrated Masters (MChem with a Year Abroad) degree from Cardiff University (2015-2019), having spent my third year abroad at Université Laval (Quebec City, Canada), under the supervision of Prof. Frederic Fontaine. This research focussed on developing an alternative route to the reduction of indoles by hydroboranes and culminated in the publication of my first scientific journal article in Tetrahedron (
My final year Masters project at Cardiff University, under the supervision of Dr. Niklaas Buurma, focussed on the development of an AI-assisted flow system for the automated optimisation of chemical reaction parameters. Now, having joined the Cronin Group as a PhD student in Oct. 2019, my research will focus on exploring the synthesis and discovery of molecules in automated systems. I am currently part of the Reaction-ware team. I will be looking to develop 3-D printed modules for use in the Chemputer, allowing for the automated synthesis of organic molecules, with the help of artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Although I have a visual impairment, it certainly will not stop myself nor my supervisor from performing this research and I am excited to be a part of such a collaborative effort to increase the open access to performing complex chemistry; ultimately allow more people with disabilities/limitations such as myself to carry out chemical discovery and synthesis using these systems!
