Research Interests

I am interested in using X-ray and neutron diffraction methods to solve chemical problems.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals in considerable detail the distribution of electronic charge in molecules. Complex molecular structures, not amenable to other techniques, can be established reliably. In favourable cases the accumulation of electrons associated with covalent bonds and the spatial distribution of lone pairs can be observed .

The recent installation in this laboratory of a Nonius KappaCCD diffractometer fitted with a computer-controlled Series 700 Cryostream provides state-of-the-art facilities for chemical crystallography. It allows us to solve routine problems with XRD in a few hours and to obtain high resolution low temperature data sets for charge density studies in a few days.
