The SIRT Project (Scottish
Integrated Research in Timber) The
partners in the SIRT Project are the Centre for Timber Engineering at Napier
University, Edinburgh; the Northern Research Station of Forest Research, which
is the research arm of the Forestry Commission; and ourselves. The project is
funded by a Strategic Research Development Grant from SHEFC, and will commence
in Spring 2004. Its aim is to bring together research in forestry, wood science
and civil engineering to underpin the use of Sitka spruce, from existing
Scottish forests, in the construction industry. The vision is to give Scotland
an international presence in wood research and make it the world centre for
research on Sitka spruce timber. Glasgow's role in realising this vision is to
find out how the mechanical properties of spruce timber are related to its
microstructure, from the molecular up to the cellular scale. We have a access
to range of techniques, mainly spectroscopic, for examining polymer composition
and polymer orientation in wood.
