Alexander (Alex) Beaton Garcia
Dr.
Post Doctoral Researcher
I grew up in the Highlands of Scotland and moved down to the “big city” to do an integrated Master’s in Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh. During this time, I did an Erasmus placement in sunny Alicante and researched palladium-catalysis in deep eutectic solvents with Dr Gabriela Guillena Townley. I then did an 8-month research internship in organic synthesis at the University of Vienna with Prof. Nuno Maulide before returning to Edinburgh in 2019 to do my PhD on the subject of “Aluminium/boron exchange reactions for catalysis” under the guidance of Prof. Steven Thomas and Dr. Michael Cowley. I started in the Cronin group in 2023 and I am working on developing the Schlenkputer – an automated Schlenk line for the manipulation of air- and moisture-sensitive compounds.
Outside of science, I enjoy playing sports, hanging out with friends and travelling.
