Teaching and related duties
Bob is Head of Teaching in the Chemistry Department where he takes an overview of all teaching in the department. He is also Class head for the Chemistry-1 class and welcomes students as a Senior Adviser of Studies and Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences. Bob teaches organic chemistry at all levels but is particularly interested in developing an understanding of mechanistic organic chemistry with students in years 1 and 2.
Natural products
The structure and biosynthesis of natural products have been an interest for many years. Several reviews have appeared on triterpenoids (with Joe Connolly) since 1986 in Natural Product Reports. Since 1996 Bob has been writing “Hot off the Press” in every issue of Natural Product Reports covering up-to-date news of natural products and bioorganic chemistry with the co-authors Andy Pitt, Marie Claire Parker and now Andrew Sutherland. For the past few years Bob has been writing a highlights review of marine natural products in Annual Reports
Natural Product Dictionaries
Bob’s interest in the nomenclature and classification of natural products has led to the publication of various books including The Dictionary of Terpenoids, The Dictionary of Steroids and The Dictionary of Natural Products. These are all published by CRC Press.
