• PhD student in the Institute of Biomedical and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow

Research Interests

• Biophysics of membrane receptors activation
• Signalling in complex systems (cell or brain)
• Procession of integral signals (Ca²⁺ waves) from individual ones (Ca²⁺ sparks)

  I have learned mathematical apparatus necessary for an analysis of complex physical phenomena with special emphasis on biological applications such as spectroscopy, NMR, crystallography etc.

• 1996 - present. The Wellcome Trust 4-Year PhD Program "Molecular Functions in Disease", The Institute of Biomedical and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow, UK.

Research Experience

• 1990 - 91. A high school experimental project ''Diffuse effects of photochemical reactions'' in The Department of Organic Dyes at The East Bohemian University in Pardubice, The Czech Republic (Ing R. Hrdina).
• summer 1995. The 4th Summer School on Raman and UV Spectroscopy in Biophysics and Biochemistry organized by The Physical Institute of The Charles University, Prague (Dr J. Stepánek).
• 1995 - 96. Mgr degree thesis ''Local Conformational Changes in Peptide Molecules Probed by Raman Optical Activity'' in The Physical Institute of The Charles University in Prague (Dr V. Baumruk).

  I have contributed to a construction of an instrument for a measurement of Raman Optical Activity and carried out initial experiments with standard protein molecules.

• 1996/97. Laboratory Placements undertaken in the first year of PhD course:

  1. The crystal structure of Hen Egg-White Lysozyme at 1.9 Å  (Prof N. Isaeck).
  2. The catalytic mechanism of the Tn3 site-specific recombination system (Dr M. Stark).
  3. Inhibitory effect of suramin on a_2A-adrenoceptor-G_i1 fusion protein (Prof G. Milligan).

• 1997 - present. PhD Project: An Interaction between Leptin and its Receptor ( Prof. J. M. Allen and Prof. A. Cooper.)

  My project comprises of two major parts: A construction of an expression system for a production of recombinant leptin receptor and Biophysical charactrisation of receptor activation. The first part falls into an isolation of receptor cDNA, its engineering for expression and purification in both mammalian and Baculovirus expression systems and purification of a recombinant protein. In the second part, spectroscopic and microcalorimetric experiments will be carried out to characterise receptor activation.
