Teaching Materials

Dr Forgan currently teaches the first year Transition Metals course, with the lecture notes and an online revision quiz accessible from the Chemistry 1 page on Moodle2, and administers the 3rd year Inorganic Teaching lab with Dr Symes.

Molecular models displayed in the Transition Metals lecture course are available to download for free as .pdb files, which may be opened using the free software Mercury. Models of the following geometries and isomers are available:

Linear geometry
Trigonal planar geometry
Tetrahedral geometry
Square planar geometry, as the cis and trans isomers
Trigonal bipyramidal geometry
Square pyramidal geometry
Octahedral geometry
Octahedral geometry, as the fac and mer isomers
Octahedral tris-bidentate complexes of the general formula [M(bidentate)3], which are chiral and so have two enantiomers; enantiomer 1 and enantiomer 2.
Octahedral complexes of the general formula [M(bidentate)2(monodentate)2], which have an achiral trans isomer and two enantiomers of the chiral cis isomer; cis-enantiomer 1 and cis-enantiomer 2.
