June 2024 - Glasgow-Radboud Symposium
Group members Nicola, Skye and Andrew were in Nijmegen this week for the Glasgow-Radboud symposium on chemical biology! Thanks to Radboud’s Kevin Neumann for hosting us! And well done to our PhD student Skye won first prize in the oral presentations category!
June 2024 - Summer Day Out
The group’s annual summer day out was a roaring success at ScotKart’s Go-Karting track. We all got ourselselves in gear ready to race round the track to crown the ultimate speed champion of the group. Guesses as to who won?
May 2024 - RSC Sustainable Labs Grant
Huge congratulations to our own Dr Nicola Wade and Kirsty Arnott for successfully securing an RSC Sustainable Laboratories Grant. They’ll be optimising the use of a non-toxic alternative to DMF on the Biotage Initiator+ Alstra peptide synthesiser.
March 2024 - RSC Retrosynthesis Competition
We’re very proud of our PhD students Skye and Michael for making it to the final of the RSC’s National Retrosynthesis Competition in London. Out of over 60 teams, the University of Glasgow made the top 10.
December 2023 - Christmas
Another merry Christmas lunch for the Jamieson Group at Curlers Rest this year. A few sore heads were detected the next morning! Happy Holidays from us in the Jamieson Group!
November 2023 - RSC Chemical Biology and Bioorganic Chemistry Lectureship
Andrew received the RSC CBBG lecureship award for his outstanding contribution to the chemical biology community and his exceptional research achievements on the design and syntheses of peptides and peptidomimetics for chemical biology applications. He has also been dedicated to supporting young researchers and ensuring equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) within the scientific community. He actively supports these values as a member of the RSC Award Nomination Equality and Diversity Working Group.
He will be presented with the award at the 20th RSC Chemical Biology and Bioorganic Group Firbush Conference in September 2024.
May 2023 - Kinase Inhibitor Design Symposium
Our own Skye Brettell was presenting her PhD research at the RSC-SCI’s Symposium on Kinase Inhibitor Design this week in London. Well-done Skye!
August 2023 - Summer Sports Day
On a sunny day in Summer 2023 the group took part in a section-wide sports day and barbecue held at the Garscube Sports complex. The event was organised between the Jamieson and France groups, and was a great way to encourage networking and some friendly competition in the section. Students, post-docs and PIs alike battled it out in school sports day themed races like the 3-legged race and egg-and-spoon race, with a big game of rounders to finish off the day.
Christmas 2022
Christmas was celebrated in 2022 with a lovely meal at The Bothy, moving to the department christmas party and then onwards to our local pub, The Aragon.
August 2022 - Professor Andrew Jamieson
Introducing Professor Andrew Jamieson! Big news this week on Andrew’s well-deserved Professorship at the University of Glasgow! We are all very proud of him!
June 2022 - Loch Lomond Cruise
The group away day in September 2022 was a little different to the hill climbs in previous years. Instead of climbing up one of the hills surrounding Loch Lomond, the group embarked on a relaxed sightseeing cruise around the Loch itself. It was a brilliant day out enjoyed by all, finished off with a Mexican lunch and a trip to the pub to finish the day off in style.
Christmas 2021
The group celebrated the Christmas holidays with a lunch out at the Curlers Rest, followed by a trip to Elfingrove – an ice rink set up in Kelvingrove park. Everyone had a great time skating, some even managed to let go of the edge!!
Away Day 2021 - Ben Lomond
The trip out of the lab involved another climb up Ben Lomond, aiming to beat the time from the climb in 2019. The group ended up walking into the clouds to reach the top, getting a beautiful view of pure white surroundings from the summit! On reaching the bottom of the hill, a few brave group members ventured into the loch for a very chilly swim while the rest stayed to cheer them on from the shoreline. Everyone headed over to the Inn at Balmaha for a drink (or hot chocolate to warm back up) before heading back to Glasgow.
Away day 2020 - Conic Hill Climb
The group managed to make another (very wet and windy) but enjoyable climb, this time tackling Conic Hill!
The conquering of the summit was then celebrated with a few refreshments in Scotland's oldest (probably) pub - The Clachan Inn, Drymen.
Thanks to the new post-doc Caroline for organising!
August 2018 - 35th European Peptide Symposium, Dublin
Andrew, Amit and Laura travelled to Dublin City University toward the end of August to attend the 35th European Peptide Symposium.
Andrew was delighted to deliver a talk highlighting some of the group's work on rationally designed peptidomimetics and both Laura and Amit presented posters.
June 2018 - Ben Lomond Climb
The group recently made the climb up Ben Lomond!
A short drive away from the lab in Glasgow, at 974m the Munro is certainly a challenge not for the faint of heart. Luckily, being a group of research chemists, it was not the first uphill struggle we had faced. Of course, the climb was made all the more enjoyable by the beautiful Stirlingshire sunshine.
We hope the Ben will be the first of many Munros to be bagged by the group!
May 2018 - DSTL Visit
Andrew and the stapled peptide team (Fergus, Laura and Caitlin) visited our collaborators at DSTL Porton Down last week to discuss the latest results from our medicinal chemistry project.
The meeting room had a display of the history of respirators including this intimidating chap!
